Job description
A bike mechanic diagnoses, repairs, and assembles bicycles, ensuring safety and performance. Responsibilities include tuning gears, repairing brakes, fixing flats, assembling new bikes, and providing customer service, often servicing road, mountain, and electric bikes. They must have strong technical knowledge, mechanical aptitude, and good communication skills.
Key Responsibilities
- Repairs & Maintenance: Performing complete bike services, including cleaning, degreasing, lubricating, and fixing broken parts.
- Diagnostics: Identifying mechanical issues and providing accurate repair estimates to customers.
- Assembly: Building new bicycles from boxes to manufacturer specifications.
- Component Upgrades: Installing and adjusting accessories like lights, fenders, and racks.
- Safety Checks: Ensuring all bikes are safe for use, particularly for rentals or after repairs.
- Customer Service: Advising clients on maintenance and repairs.
Required Skills and Qualifications
- Technical Knowledge: Deep understanding of bicycle components, drive-trains, braking systems, and suspension.
- Mechanical Aptitude: Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.
- Physical Stamina: Ability to lift bikes, stand for long periods, and work with hands.
- Communication: Ability to explain technical issues clearly to customers.
- Organization: Managing service schedules and inventory.
Common Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in a bike shop or certifications in bicycle technology (e.g., UBI) are preferred.
