HMC Operator

HMC Operator (Horizontal Machining Centre Operator)

Department: Production / CNC Machining

Reports To: Production Supervisor / HOD

Location: Coimbatore

Job Summary The HMC Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining Horizontal Machining Centres to produce precision metal components according to engineering drawings and quality standards. The role includes machine setup, fixture alignment, tool setting, CNC program handling, and ensuring dimensional accuracy through proper inspection. Key Responsibilities 1. Machine Setup & Operation • Set up HMC machines with correct tools, fixtures, and work holding devices. • Operate the machine to produce components as per CNC programs and drawings. • Ensure proper workpiece alignment using fixtures, rotary tables, and pallets. • Make necessary adjustments to tool offsets, wear compensation, and cutting parameters. 2. CNC Program Handling • Load, run, and edit CNC programs (Fanuc / Siemens / Mazak / Mitsubishi—whichever applicable). • Read and interpret G-codes, M-codes, tool paths, and machining sequences. • Coordinate with CNC programmers for corrections or optimization. 3. Quality Checks & Inspection • Interpret engineering drawings, GD&T symbols, and process sheets. • Perform first-piece inspection, in-process measurements, and final inspection. • Use precision instruments: o Vernier calipers o Micrometers o Height gauges o Bore gauges o CMM knowledge (optional but preferred) • Maintain component accuracy within required tolerances. 4. Maintenance & Safety • Maintain daily machine housekeeping (coolant levels, lubrication, chip removal). • Identify tool wear and request replacements on time. • Report machine abnormalities to maintenance team. • Adhere to all safety protocols and PPE requirements. 5. Documentation & Reporting • Maintain production logs, job cards, and inspection records. • Document tool usage, cycle times, and any deviations or rejections. • Work according to ISO, TS, or company-specific quality systems. Skills & Qualifications Technical Skills • 1–5+ years of hands-on experience with HMC machines. • Strong understanding of horizontal machining, pallet systems, and multi-side machining. • Knowledge of CNC controllers (Fanuc / Siemens / Mazak / Mitsubishi). • Ability to read mechanical drawings and understand GD&T. • Proficiency in using precision measuring instruments. Soft Skills • Attention to detail and strong quality focus. • Good communication skills. • Ability to work independently and in team environments. • Problem-solving skills and adaptability. Educational Requirements • ITI / Diploma in Mechanical, Machinist, Fitter, Tool & Die, or related fields. • Additional certification in CNC/HMC operation is a plus. Work Environment • Manufacturing / Machine shop setting • May require standing for long work hours Salary Range • Experienced: Based on their relevant experience, technical proficiency, and prevailing industry standards
