CNC Turning Operator

Department: Production / CNC Machining

Reports To: Production Supervisor / HOD

Location: Coimbatore

Job Summary

The CNC Turning Operator is responsible for setting up and operating CNC turning machines (lathe

machines) to manufacture precision components according to engineering drawings, process sheets,

and quality standards. The role involves tooling setup, program loading, dimensional inspection, and

machine maintenance.

Key Responsibilities

1. Machine Setup & Operation

• Set up CNC turning machines with proper tools, collets, chucks, and fixtures.

• Load raw material and align workpieces accurately.

• Operate CNC turning center to produce components as per program and specifications.

• Make tool offsets, wear adjustments, and speed/feed corrections as required.

2. CNC Program Handling

• Load and run CNC programs (Fanuc / Siemens / Haas / Mitsubishi etc.).

• Understand and interpret G-codes and M-codes.

• Modify minor program parameters with permission (e.g., depth of cut, feed rate).

• Report program issues to the CNC programmer.

3. Quality Inspection

• Read and interpret engineering drawings and GD&T symbols.

• Measure components using:

o Vernier calipers

o Micrometers (inside/outside)

o Bore gauges

o Height gauges

o Thread gauges / plug gauges

• Perform first-piece inspection, in-process inspection, and final inspection.

• Maintain dimensional tolerances and surface finish standards.

4. Maintenance & Safety

• Perform routine machine cleaning, coolant level checks, lubrication, and chip removal.

• Ensure tools are sharp and replaced when worn out.

• Report machine faults immediately to maintenance.

• Follow all safety protocols and use required PPE.

5. Documentation & Reporting

• Maintain job cards, production logs, and inspection reports.

• Record tool usage, cycle times, and rejection details.

• Follow ISO/TS or company-specific quality systems.

Skills & Qualifications

Technical Skills

• 1–5+ years of hands-on experience with CNC turning machines.

• Good knowledge of turning operations such as facing, taper turning, threading, grooving,

boring, etc.

• Understanding of CNC controls (Fanuc preferred).

• Ability to read mechanical drawings and use precision measuring tools.

Soft Skills

• Strong attention to detail.

• Good communication and teamwork skills.

• Problem-solving abilities.

• Ability to work independently and meet production deadlines.

Educational Requirements

• ITI / Diploma in Mechanical, Turner, Machinist, or related fields.

• Additional CNC training or certification is an advantage.

Work Environment

• Manufacturing / Machine shop environment

• May require standing for long hours

• Shift-based work depending on production needs
